FOXTON SURF AND LIFE SAVING CLUB.

GENERAL MEETING

There was a large attendance at the general meeting of ithe Foxton Surf and Life Saving Club held in Fa-irey’s rooms last evening and presided over by Mr*. M. E. Perreau (president). ' Mr. J. R, Ilardie, of Palmerston North, wrote accepting the position as Vice-President to the Chib and forwarded a donation of £1 1/whicli was gratefully received. Correspondence was received from Mr. W. Collier, of Palmerston North, who urged upon members the advisability of competing for their bronze medalions before the close of the season. Hfc offered to visit Foxton for the purpose of coaching members and informed them that if they took their water work before the end of the season the theoretical side could be gone through at a later date. •

It was decided to accept Mr. Collier’s offer and to thank him for his offer of assistance.

The secretary reported that all the costumes were now to hand and both reels were functioning properly. The new one recently provided by the Harbour Board was much appreciated as well as the new line and belt for the old reel. The latter was put in working order and used during Sunday’s de-

monstration. Mr. R. Reay reported that Mr. Palmer, of Levin, who was interested in the formation of a Surf and Life Saving Club in that town for the purpose of patrolling the Hokio Beach, had asked members of the local patrol over to Levin during a week end to be decided on for the purpose of giving the pro - ject a boost. He desired that the loam arrive on Saturday and stay the week end. All expenses would be paid. It was decided to accept the invitation and the matter of selection of a team to make the trip was left in the hands of Captain I. Burns. Mr. Collier was elected

manager for the trip. Mr. F. Burns (captain of the Club) said that since last meeting be had taken up the matter of the formation of a school patrol. It was his intention to obtain the services of a school team and train them in Life Saving methods as later the boys would prove useful members of the Club. He had also taken up the matter of a formation of a football club and arranged a preliminary match with Oroua Downs for to-morrow.

Mr. S. Austin considered the proposals outlined by Mr. Burns good ones which would make for the

solidity and efficiency of the Club, fhe organising of a football club vould be the means of keeping inerest in the Club alive after the ■lose of the surf season.

Mr. lv. Reay suggested that the Club affiliate with the Palmerston North Wednesday Football Club and enter a team in the Wednesday competition to play in the Third Grade section, hoot ball was excellent training for the Surf Club members and also provided a means of recreation for footballers who could not play on Satui’days. It was decided to form a football club to be called the Foxton Surf and Life Saving 1 Club and Mr. R, Reay was elected captain and Mr. J. Robertson vice-captain. Mr. E. Alsop will carry out the du-

ties of secretary. The Club’s colours will be the same as the Surf Club, viz., red and white.

Mr. Reay considered that by the Club taking up football it would afford itself the biggest advertisement possible as the Surf Club would be advertised every time the team played in Palmerston North. The matter of insurance was discussed to cover both players and Surf Club members and the matter was left in the hands of AH'. F. Burns to bring down a report to the next general meeting. A ““football selection committee consisting of Messrs Reay, Robertson and Alsop was set up. Mr. F. Burns brought down a scheme for raising money for the Club. He said ho had been in touch witli a' friend of his, a well-known boxer, of Wellington, and had obtained his services and those of a visiting! American boxer, with one or two well known amateurs for preliminary bouts, for the purpose of stagiug a boxing tournament in the local Town Hall at an early date to assist the finances of the Club. The whole affair would cost the Club very little as the boxers were prepared to assist the Surf Club in the matter and" all that now remained to be fixed was the obtaining of sanction from the N.Z. Boxing Association for the formation of .an amateur boxing club locally without which the bout could not be staged. He had written Wellington on the matter and was awaiting further communication. The big bout would be of ' ten rounds. The chairman complimented Mr. Burns on his efforts on behalf of the Club and suggested that no action be taken in the matter until a reply had been received from Wellington.

GENERAL. It was decided to patrol the beach over the Easter holidays. Miss Mitchell was accorded a vote of thanks for the donation of a cake for competition at the euchre to-night. Mr. E. Morgan was elected a member of the social committee. Plans and specifications in cons nection with a proposed Club house were tabled, discussed and approved. The hnancial statement in connection with the Clubs various ac-

Indies during the past month or so was submitted by the secretary and disclosed a credit balance of £4O odd.

Accounts amounting to £ls 19/werc passed for payment.
