THE YOUNG IDEA.
The London Daily Chronicle has initiated a discussion under the heading*, “What is Your Idea of Heaven?”
Mr. Edgar Lustgarlen, President of the Oxford Union, and Mr. Kenneth Adam, president of the Cambridge Union, have contributed ideas.
Mr. Lustgarton says: “The ancients conceived Heaven with music, harps and golden pavements. The time to reconstruct is overripe. My idea is to change the old-fashioned wings for a light aeroplane, have Rolls-Royces in view of motorcars, anil macadam roads would he preferable to gold. I would want leisure in Heaven to read all the hooks and see all the pictures. I would want to sec three novels weekly by Galsworthy, Bennett and Sinclair Lewis, and three plays weekly by Shaw, O’Casey and Coward. Nevertheless, I hesitate, as unqualified leisure alight prove me larking in vitality.” Mr. Adam say's: “Not long' since 1 believed in Heaven as a place of jasper gates and marble halls, more magnificent than Wembley. I know now that I cannot believe God as a person or Heaven as a place. In any case, it does not matter much. Heaven and dea.th are a long way off. Life is a great adventure. Physical faculties and energies call out for something to do. The idealism of youth wants to bring Heaven earthwards. It is more concerned with pulling down slums than with building sky castles.”
