FINAL PUNCH CONTROVERSY,
REF EH EE’S IMMEDIATE action. Two tilings arc clearly shown by the film of the recent Pete SarronTomniy Donovan fight, which was shown at the Roxy Theatre tor the first time this morning states the Auckland Star. One is that Sarron hod the battle won when he landed the blow that earned his disqualification; the other is that there was no suggestion of hesitation on tlie part of the referee (Mr. Dick. Menlo) in ruling the lilile American out. When Sarron and Donovan clashed at New Plymouth a fortnight. ago 1 they provided one of the hardest battles ever fought, in a Now Zealand ring. The only unfortunate tiling about, the match was the 'ending, and over: the past few days there has been some controversy about the action of the referee in disqualifying Sarro nl'or landing on the hack oi’ his beaten opponent’s head. The film story of the light shows that (lie .final punch landed on (he hack of the Wnitarn tireman’s head and warranted the disdisqualifying Sarron for landinf on There seems tilth 1 doubt that, the I,low was . accidental, hut it. was a foil 1 nevertheless. ll has been published in a Southern paper that Mr. Menlo lost; his head in that lie actually started to count Donovan out before declaring him a winner on a. foul, but the picture <t£ the light does not hear this (ml. Donovan is seen to drop to I lie boards and Mr. Meale to bend over immediately and raise tlie* 'beaten mail’s hand. There is nbsoluiely nothing’ to indicate that there was hesitation on the part of the official or that he actually commenced the count. Aucklanders who have seen Mr. Menlo counting out a man in the Town Hall will remember that he is very definite in his action, marking every second with p movement of his hand. The film of this fight would go to show that as soon as the illegal blow landed his mind was made up and that he declared Donovan the winner with the minimum amount of delay.
