'Shannon seniors are faced Avith the problem of reforming their team this season. The Dalzell family has left the district, and in. addition, Payne will not be playing. It is quite probable that others who played last season may not be seen on the field. The club also reports the loss of its late president, Mr. A. 'Birehall, Avho has removed to Palmerston North. In the election of officers, in connection Avi'th the Shannon Club, Mr. A. Richards was elected president, Mr. G. Mitchell secretary and Mr. W. Moynihan, treasurer. Messrs A. Richards and G. G. Mitchell have again been appointed as delegates to the Rugby Union. Another Avell-knoAvn identity who has left the district is Mir. Johanseh, last year’s senior selector. Mr. li. Sands is uoav chosen to fill his place. Mr. Sands acted as a referee last season.
Cliff Hunt, well-known in this district, Avill he representing IngleAvood this season and has received order to get into training for the forthcoming visit from the British team. Jacobs has announced his intention of playing again this season.
FLOOD LIGHT TO BE INSTALLED ON EASTON PARK.
A committee meeting of the Foxton Rugby Football Club was held on Easton Park on Tuesday evening when members inspected the area Avitli a view to locating a suitable spot for the erection of a flood light to enable players to practice on the reserve at nights during the coming season. Mr. L. McCarthy, Avho had been deputed to go into the matter, reported that he had received a tender of £lO for the erection of a 1000 candle power lamp on the park.
Members considered this would lie quite suitable for practice purposes and work out much cheaper than retaining the present practice shed.
It was decided to erect the lamp on the northern side of the swimming baths and it is understood that the work Avill be proceeded Avith at an early date.
A suggestion has been advanced by the Shannon Club that the Union should assist in some Avay with grants to country clubs for the lighting of practice rooms or gymnasiums for training purposes bn the grounds that country players have not. the facilities of those in the toAvns. This suggestion should meet Avith the Avholeliearted support of the Foxton delegates if it is brought forward at a Union meeting. In the past it has cost the local club in the vicinity of £6 per annum to provide such accommodation for its players.
Football Avill not commence locally in real earnest unlii April, hut on the 22 nd of this month a "pipe-opener” will be afforded players by a benefit match in'aid of the Club’s funds. On that date the employees of Messrs Ross, Rough and Co’s, mill Avill meet all comers on Easton Park.
The (Club intends holding a shop clay and dance a t -an early date in aid of its funds. Football in Foxton this season should he reach a good standard. Most of the players who participated in the game last year are still here and teams in all grades should he strong. A. B. McCorkindale will be missed from the ranks of the juniors.
The Wellington Rugby. Football Club, lias reached its 60th year. Arragements are being made for appropriate diamond jubilee celebrations, andlcontact is being established Avith some of the early players.
