HIGHWAYS CONSTRUCTION
PROGRESS IN JANUARY. The more important works carried out by the Main Highways Board during' January included the following in this and neighbouring districts: — iWellington-Auckland, via Taranaki (No. 9 Highway District). — Hutt County, Paremata to Horokiwi Valley: A concrete culvert at 7M. 15.50 is in progress. Horokiwi Valley to Paekakariki: Seventy-three chains have been prepared and sealed with a first coat of bituminous material; 48 chains of preparation is in progress. Hutt County, Paekakariki to Wlaikanae: One hundred and twen-ty-live chains has received a second coat of bitumen. Approaches to bridge culvert at McKay’s Crossing have been shaped and partly metalled. Manakau to Levin: The While aw a bridge has been completed, and the approach fillings have been completed and are being consolidated. Levin to Whirokiuo bridge: Twenty chains of bituminous surfacing has been applied. Fox to n (Borough: A bad corner has been cut back to improve the visibility. Levin to Palmerston North, via Shannon, Horowhenua County. — Levin to County boundary at Tokomaru: The re-construction from Ihe Whirokiiio Riding boundary to Shannon is in progress; 20 chains of heavy cut and fill work have been completed, making a total of 120 chains of formation to date; 40 chains of foundation metalling has been completed. Himatangi to Ashhurst via Palmerston North (No. 9 Highway District. —Kairanga County, Rungiotu to Palmerston North to County boundary: Bituminous concrete Racing, 100 chains of base course was completed, making a total of 120 chains of base course and 20 chains sealed to date. Oroua Countv: The first coat bituminous sealing was completed. Stone crushing for the two course work is in progress.
SansoH-Palmerstou North.—Maria watu ICounty, Sanson to Awaluiri: The uusurfaced section is being prepared for scaling. Awahuri to Mangaweka via Kimbolton. —Kiwitea County, county boundary to Rangitikei River Bi'idge: Two culverts between Cheltenham and Kimbolton have been completed and the third is in progress.
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs M. E. Pcrreau and A. J. Kcllow (Eeilding). Prom Mrs. E. J. Krouse, asking for the refund of insurance money held in trust by the Board, pending the re-erection of the dwelling destroyed by lire a few years ago.— Agreed to.
