WANGANUI BOARD FAVOURS DIS OR ETIONA R Y PO WE R, At yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board Mr. J. K. Ilornblow spoke to his motion “that this board will not appoint married women teachers if their husbands are able to support them and their families, provided that there are other eligible applicants.” have been made that married women are holding positions when their husbands are able to support them, thus keeping other qualified teachers out of employment,” said ,Mr. Ilornblow. “I do not, know any board in New Zealand that is favourable to keeping married women teachers when thenhusbands are in good positions. I wish to know the attitude of this board in the matter.” The Board unanimously agreed to the alteration of the motion to read as follows: “That the Government be asked to amend the Education Act in the direction of giving education boards discretionary powers in the appointment of married women teachers.” 'The mover pointed out that there was no intention on his part to impose hardship on married women iteaehers whose husbands or homes were dependent upon their earnings.
