THE CHILDREN.
A PARTING WORD
FROM: (R >YER NOR-< JEN ER AL. ft was not surprising, in view of the interest the Governor-General (Sir Charles Fergusson) has always shown in the children of the Dominion, that lie should have made special reference lo I heir future welfare in llie course of his speech at the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday night.
“I would like lo see the children of New Zealand, when they grow up,” he said, “preserve that naturalness, that simplicity, that gentleness, that gentlemanliucss, which always characterises the people of New Zealand. I would like to see the parents, by precept and by example, bring up their children lo love the brotherhood, to serve Cod, and to honour the King. (Applause). 1 would like to see them tiring lip their children lo be sober, serious, (Jod-fearing people brave, tender, nml sympathetic I would like to see them applying the principles' of 'Christianity to all iheir dealings with their fellowmen. I would like to see them staunch in preserving what T would call lhe fundamentals of eitizenship as handed down lo them bv their forefathers—thrift, courage, endurance, self-reliance, loyally, and strong religious feeling. This country is often described as •Bod’s Own Country,’ and well if may be called that, bill rein ember that we can take no credit for i lint. But what we can strive to In* is God’s own people. (Applause). Is that u dream? I don’t see why il should lie. It might well be a reality, and I have sufficient faith in the people of New Zealand to believe that they will, to use Lord Rosebery's words —shrink from no sacrifice in the fulfilment of their mission: be true to the heritage handed down lo them by Iheir foregathers; Ilia I they will transmit that heritage lo their children, and please God, to their remotest descendants, enriched and undefiled —this blessed and splendid Dominion.”
