JANUARY GRADING RETURNS,

Tho grading- returns for hemp, | tow, stripper tow, and stripper 'slips for the month of January have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as' follows: — Ports G.F. H.F. L.F. 0. Auckland 109 073 297 29 Wellington 77 1179 710 275 Foxton — 1 788 304 72 Picton 28 23 100 15 Dunedin 41 118 34! Pt. Chalmers Blulf 9 229 501 80 Thirty-eight bales at Auckland, 70 at Wellington, 08 at Foxton, two at Picton, and 24 at the Bluff were rejected. One bale at Auckland was condemned. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year beiug given in parenthesis:—(Fine, nil (8); good fair, 324 (018); high fair, 3033 (3003); low fair 2012 (2005); common, 477 (450); rejected 202 (429); condemned 1 (40); a total of 0049 bales as against 7053 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 1004 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —-Auckland 1207, Wellington 2311, Foxton 1232, Picton 174, Dunedin 193, Pt. Chalmers 23, Bluff 909. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:— Ports Ist 2nd 3rd Auckland 10 298 04 Wellington 41 437 122 Foxton 97 232 7 Picton 17 4 Bluff —* 183 228 Dunedin Seventeen bales at Auckland, 23 at Wellington, and seven at the Bluff were condemned.

The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being- given in parenthesis:—lst grade 165 (274), 2nd grade 1223 (1141), 3rd grade 421 (541), condemned 47 (153), a total of 1856 bales as against 2109 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 253 hales.

The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 389, Wellington 623, Foxton 336, Picton 21, Bluff 418, Dutiediu 69. Stripper Tow: —Nineteen bales at Wellington were graded Ist grade. Fifty-five bales at Wellington and S 6 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Two bales at Wellington were condemned. A total number of 162 bales as against 187 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 25 bales. Stripper Slips:—Three bales at •the Bluff and two at Dunedin were graded 2nd grade. Seven bales at the Bluff and 26 at Dunedin were graded 3rd grade. Forty-four bales at the Bluff were condemned. The total number graded was 82 bales its against 102 bales graded the same period last year, a da-n-ease of 2.0 bales.
