MISHAP IN MAIN STREET.

■RESIDENT KNOCKED DOWN BY OAR. Shortly before 12 o’clock to-day an old and well respected resident in the person of Mr. \\. E. De Ridded, of Liddel Street, was knocked down in Main SI reel hy a motor car. Fortunately he was not seriouslv injured ami al the time of going to press was reported to have almost recovered from the shock of Die accident.

It appears Dial a bicycle riden by Mr. L. Polls was proceeding up Alain Street in Ihe direction of the Triangle and n a ear was travelling down Main Street in a southerly direction when Mr. De Kidder stepped off the footpath in front of Chung Wall’s fruit shop. The bicycle rider swerved his machine to miss the car- which also pulled off to dodge Die hike. Mr. De Ridder who was about thirty feet out from the footpath hy Ibis time, noticed Die bicycle and tried to dodge it. He tailed lo see the ear and steplied back into its path. The driver u jis nimble to swerve tile, vehicle siinicienDy lo clear him and he was knocked down b.v the front mudguard but the car came, to a standstill in less than a yard and a half. Mr. De Ridder was immediately carried into Mr. iCorn’s shop and Die driver sent for Dr. Wyllie. The doctor happened to he out of town at the time, but on examining Mr. De Rridder shortly after at his home lie found Dint no hones were broken till hough the patient was suffering from extensive bruises along his leg. As a result Mr. De Ridder will la- milliard lo his home for ;i few days, but if is hoped that he will soon he about, again. The driver, of the ear was Mr. J. li. Aibhotl, of Auckland, who was passing through the town. He was travelling very slowly at Ihe lime of the mishap and did all that was possible for Mr. De Kidder’s enmf oi*t. The accident was unavoidable.
