ANOTHER SURPRISE.
Callanmore (£556) and IJanore (£414) dominated the betting in the Wharangi Handicap, but. as was evidenced on the opening day. a surprise was forthcoming, the winner turning up in Broad Acre, although he did not return his backers as large a price as Moorland had dope in the same company on the previous day. There was quite a Foxton flavour about the Carnarvon Hack Cup for last year’s winner, Balloon, repeated the performance by again scoring from another Fostontrained candidate in Goldlike, although Skyrider very nearly upset matters, the Awapuni mare being only caught in the last few strides after running wide out from the turn. There was good support for Goldlike (£408). Green Acre (£341) and the bracketed pair. Di-rank and Democratic (£284). with the winner next in demand and, of the quintette, Green Acre was the only one to miss a placing. A race for positions ensued following upon the tapes being lifted. Monoie and Kilorell leading out of the straight from Fallow, Green Acre and Democratic. Going along' the hack Kilorell dropped back, but otherwise the positions among the leading- division underwent little change, although Elysianor, Skyrider, Goldlike and Balloon were making up ground. Green Acre had taken charge approaching the entrance (Concluded on page 4).
