VESTAL VIRGIN’S TOMB.
PERFECT PRESERVATION
DISCOVERY NEAR ROME,
A particularly fine, if not unique, specimen of a Roman tomb of the second or third century A.D. was brought to light a. few weeks ago at Tivoli, Italy. The find was accidental, and occurred in connection with wonkj on a new electricity station.
The tomb is that of a vestal virgin, Cossinia, and is in a perfect state of preservation, even down to the inscriptions which laud the priestess for her GO years of faithful service. The tombstone consists of a rectangular stone block surmounting five steps of travertine.
By the side-of the tomb was another monument consisting of three super-imposed square slabs. These disclosed the perfectly preserved skeleton of the priestess, near whose head lay a doll carved out of olive wood, with articulated limbs, a golden necklet and gold bracelets coiled about- its arms and legs. Cossinia belonged to a Tiburtine family mentioned by Cicero, and was a priestess of the Vestal College of Tivoli, one o>f the several centres of Latiuni most devoted to the cult, 1
