FOXTON WINS AINSLEY

•SHIELD,

Yesterday afternoon two rinks 'from Foxton visited Manawatu green to fulfil a challenge for the Ainsley Shield. Foxton was successful in obtaining this trophy by the barest of margins, the aggregate scores being 'Foxton 31, Man a wain 30.

The weather conditions were all that could be desired, and with the green in splendid playing order, a most enjoyable time was spent. A keen content in both-games resulted, the scores in either match throughout being remarkably close, a coincidence in which being that on the eleventh head both hoards showed t'hq seolres to be nine all round. The rinks and scores are as follows:—

Robinson, J. Newth, Christie, Mattar (s) 17, Temple, Butler, King, Barnes (s) 13. Radford, Low, Spooner, Gcrrand (s) 17, Stevenson, Howe, Walker, Huntley (s) 14. At the conclusion of play, Mr. Gerrand, on behalf of lianawatu players, congratulated the visitors on their win, and in presenting the Shield to the winning skip (Mr. Mattar) expressed pleasure at being able to do so, as it gave encouragement to the smaller clubs to lvold inter-club trophies. Manawatu Club, he sail'd, bad defended the Shield since before the close of last season, and he hoped Foxton would be successful in holding it just as long. Three hearty cheers were given for the winners. Mr. D. Christie replied on behalf of Foxton howlers, couching Ins remarks in humorous vein, after which cheers were given for Manawatu Club.

The next challenge, it is understood, will be from Palmerston N Club.

The Shield is on view in Mr. S Matter's window.
