SHIPPING AT THE PORT 01 FOXTON.

The ‘"Mannwatu Herald" of January (itb, 18S0, reviews t he shipping through the port during’ the past few years as follows: — A ear No. of vessels Ton. 1877 Hit) DO 30 1878 130 1)1(57 1870 1(17 13202 There were twenty saw-mills operating in the district in 1880 and a great amount of timber was shipped away regularly but there was very little trade with the South at that lime. The Foxton Harbour Board at that time was endeavouring to obtain the local wharf as an endowment and not being in possession of any endowments whatever was in a very low stale financially. The total expense of maintaining the harbour staff, consisting of a pilot and assistants was £4OO per annum. The Government derived the following revenue from the poirt at the time mentioned: — Wharf dues through Railway Department, an average of £7O per month or £S4O- - annum. Pilotage dues for IS71) amounted to £ll4 12/fi. The port was then serving a district of a population of between seven and eight thousand.
