TO THE CITIZENS OF FOXTON AND DISTRICT. The year now drawing to a close has not been marked by any outstanding events, although progress has been 1 steadily maintained. Shortly after the commencement of the present'year we were faced with a serious happening in the failure of shipping at the port, and happily this calamity has been averted qnd the port is in full swing again. At this stage I desire to express my heartfelt appreciation of the loyalty of those citizens of the town and district- who combined to restore the shipping services. A. marked improvement has been noted in the flax industry during the year, and the commercial cultivation of the raw material undoubtedly indicates a brighter outlooic for' the future. Improved methods of cultivation and top-dressing are already having a beneficial effect on the farming industry in the town and district. More land is being brought into cultivation and dairy herds are being increased. iWith the further subdivision o ! f large holdings more settlers can be accommodated on the land and an increase in the production of dairy produce can confidently be anticipated. & (So far as the town of Foxton is concerned the work of revaluing the borough is now proceeding and the incidence of local rating will- be more equitably adjusted in the near future. In conclusion I desire to congratulate everyone interested in the town and district on the splendid manner in which tlje business of the town has been conducted during the year and I confidently express the 1 hope that the coming year will bring increased prosperity and contentment to' everyone. I wish you, one and all, a really Happy and Prosperous New Year. M. E.
