SEARCH FOR GHOST.

HAUNTED MELD MYSTEIiY. BHASED BY RESIDENTS. MAN HATH A SHOTGUN. Lalrgo numbers of people in England, including several policemen, kept watch recently on a haunted field, in which local residents claim to have seen a most extraordinary ‘ ghost,” says the Daily Mail. The “ghost” is said to consist of "« tall, faintly luminous, white figure, which floats through the air, emitting- Blood-curdling shrieks, and, when annoyed, throws stories and other.missiles at its pursuers. It has been seen on various occasions lately in a large field close to the Hover estate, a group of bungalows just off the main LondonKolke'stone Road, close to Kingsdown. The field is surrounded on three sides by thick woods. One night the apparition is said to have revealed itself to no fewer than 18 people, including two women, living it. a bungalow on the estate. One of the women said: “I went down to the field one night with a crowd of other people, believing that the talk of ghosts was nonsense. After 'waiting some time, however, I was amazed to see a tall, white figure appear from the woods and glide quickly along the edge of the field against the dark background of trees. “WJe chased the figure, but it floated along over the ground, and we could not get near. And all the time it uttered the most blood r culrdliiig- noises and shrieked with insane laughter. It seemed higher than a human being. Our party split up into groups all over the field, hut we could not ■ get anywhere near it. iStones and other missiles were thrown from its direction, and we saw it for nearly an hour altogether.” Mr. Farrier, who lives in the wood, related the following story: “When I heard about this phenomenon, I went out with a party of about half-a-dozen to .see what it was all about. To my surprise, I saw a queer, slightly luminous shape nealr the ground, which rose up and appeared to float off through the trees. When I was about 20 yards off I fired at it with my shotgun, and it immediately disappeared.”

The wood in which the “ghost” s alleged to have been seen is sta - :ed to have been the scene of a nurder some years ago.
