Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1929 LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Wje desire to acknowledge wedding favours from Mr. and Mrs. J. Scott and with their many local friends, the “Herald” joins in wishing them health and happiness for the future.

All primary schools in the Wianganui'Education (Board’s district closed on Thursday and yesterday fo'r the long vacation. The first term of 1930 will begin on 3rd February next.

This is from the Wanganui Herald: Who says bowls isn’t a dangerous game? A local minister reports putting his thumb -out the other day while playing bowls. Some years ago the late Police Commissioner, Mr. Dinnie, broke a leg through stepping on kitty. At Auckland on Thursday Mr. Hunt, S.M., fined Cecil Rollings Green, abed 59, an accountant, who has recently arrived from Canada, £lO, with the alternative of one month’s gaol, on a charge of assaulting a girl aged six years, by kissing her. A charge of indecent assault against Green was withdrawn' on the application of the police. The (Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. 18. Mellveney, has directed the members of the Police Force throughout New Zealand that Court proceedings are to be taken under the provisions of the Anns Act against any person purchasing or selling firewolrks capable of a destractive effect by way of explosion, unless the purchaser or seller has acted under a police permit. He desires that the public shall take warning aecprdingly. The pupils of the local District High School are fortunate in possessing a teacher in the person of Miss Bindon, who has specialised in those physical exercises which make for physical fitness and correct deportment. During the break-ing-up ceremonies on Thursday afternoon, a very finished exhibition of, rhythmical exercises and dancing was given by two groups of girls from the secondary and primary departments, which called forth hearty applause from those assembled. At the forthcoming concert the public will be afforded an opportunity of witnessing further exhibitions by the pupils.

Mr. B. G. Gower, of Foxton, witnessed an unusual happening in bird life in this country at all events, the other afternoon. He was walking on his verandah when his attention was drawn to a little grey warbler which was darting hither and thither among the branches of the shrubs bordering the lawn but returning after each sully to a certain spot. On investigating Mr. Gower discovered the little bird was feeding a. shining cuckoo. This of course $ quite a common thing in England, but it is very unusual to find such a small bird as a grey warbler feeding another about ten times its weight. How the shining cuckoo became to be adopted by the grey warbler is ,a mnttetr for conjecture as it would be a difficult matter for the parent bird to lay its egg in a grey warbler’s nest, which is very small and pear shaped with the entrance in the middle of one side. Mr. Gower stated that two older birds had been seen in the vicinity for some time.
