HELP APPRECIATED.

MONEY RAISED FOR BLIND

LAD.

The sum of £l5O 6/- has now ‘been raised by Mrs. 0. F. Dalcficld, senlr., Gillespie’s Line,. Kairanga, from the sale of flowers, seeds, etc., on behalf of Master Jack Shortt, who lost his sight when he was seriously injured, by the explosion of a live shell at Foxton some time ago. The above amount was made without a single donation being asked for, and the majority of the bunches of flowers and packets (if seed were sold at 3d, each. With the exception of part of the seeds and bulbs, everything sold came from Mrs. Dalefield’s garden. The sum aimed at was £IOO, but a quantity of packets of seed was left on hand. This, with flowers sold, and a sum of £5.17/3 given in small donations, has brought the total to £l5O 6/-. This work has taken some time, as Mrs. Dalefield was several times compelled •through illness to discontinue the sales, which are now finished. All who have generously helped are thanked for their assistance.

Mrs. Dalefield has received the folowing letter from Mr. ,F. H. Shortt, of Manawatu Heads, father of the lad for whom the money was raised: —“I should like to express the keen appreciation that my wife and I both feel with regard to your splendid efforts on behalf of our son Jack. When you wrote •to us asking permission to do this for Jack we did not dream you had any higher ambition than to donate £5 or so towards Jack’s savings bank account, and we are quite overwhelmed at the handsome sum you have raised by your long and arduous efforts on his behalf. Wo feel very deeply about it, I assure you, as we wetre complete strangers to you when you wrote us, and that you should have been so touched by the loss of sight suffered by our son, as to want to help in so practical a manner, has meant a great deal to us. Had we for one moment imagined you intended doing so much, we would have hesitated considerably before acceding to your request at the thought of how much hard and often unpleasant work it would mean to you. However, as I say, we did not know 1 the full amount of your intention and gave our permission imagining you wished merely to col-' , lect a very nominal sum. Will you please express our very sincere thanks to all who have purchased your wares, when you publish your final total and tell them that the money collected has all been banked, for Jack and will, we are sure, be more than useful in assisting to launch him in some trade or business, which will help to support him when lie finally leaves the Blind Institute and start to earn his own living. What we really feel of gratitude toward yourself is beyond our expressing. We can only use the common place words of our language and ask you to accept again our very deepest and sincerest thanks for your splendid kindness. With kindest regards from Mrs. Shortt and myself, believe me, gratefully and sincerely yours, F. H. Shortt.” ,
