BRAVE YET MODEST.

A modest act of bravery on the part of an Ashburton High School boy has been brought to notice, says the “Ashburton Guardian.” A visitor from. Chlristehurch, Mr. J. Taylor, accompanied by his young \son, were in Ashburton during the week-end, and visited the river, where the young lad had a bathe. Owing to the treacherous nature of the current, he was taken out of Iris depth and was caimed swiftly down stream. His plight was seen by the High School youth, whose identity remains unknown.Ho plunged into the river and, assisting the younger boy, slowly fought his way to the bank. Meanwhile, Mr. Tavldr was frantically making his way along the bank, and when lie reached the spot where his son had been assisted out of the -water there was no sign of the rescuer, who had unobtrusively disappeared. His son suffered little more than nervous strain, amd soon recovered. The promptitude of the station ty was reported to the headmaster of the school (Mr. E. A. Ciookroft) in a letter from Mr. Taylor, who warmjly commended the rescuer on his plucky and unhesitating action. As a token of his appreciation he enclosed a donation toward the school sports fund. The letter was read to the assembled :.pils, who loudly applauded the unknown hero.
