FOXTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
GALA DAY MARRED BY WET WEATHER.
The gala day in connection with the breaiking-iip ceremonies at the local District High School on Wednesday was spoilt by the inclement weather whiph prevented holding many of the attractions and stalls in the grounds. The staff and scholars worked with a will to re'arrange the stalls, etc., inside the primary school building. The weatbetr, however, did not prevent a large attendance of parents and public with the result that the spacious corridors and class rooms were all too small to accommodate these Who did attend. Within the building a carnival spirit prevailed and the rooms echoed with the joyful noise of the pupils. Stalls containing produce and -home industries, cakes and sweets, ice cream, fancy goods, etc., were situated in 'the classrooms and afternoon tea was dispensed in the south corridor. In order to assist the school funds parents responded liberally with gifts and the sale of these netted a substantial sum. The stalls were presided oven 1 by the ' scholars who proved themselves keeh salespeople.
Numbers of the pupils were dressed in fancy costumes which added to the gaiety of the scene. Just as the participants in the Grand March had assembled in . the playing area the rain came on again and niggers, syagmen, fairies, jockeys, and those with decorated bji-yyeles and on deedrated ponies ‘made for shelter. At a later stage the weather permitted the Grand March to take place and it yas a spectacular procession and was marshalled - by Mr. Burdes.
v (Prizes were awarded' as follows: —Girl’s fancy costumes, Blanche Thompson (“Daughter of the Harem”-) ; special mention, Margaret Barron (“Egyptian Princess”). Boys: lan Nicholas (“Swagger”); horseman, L. Davey (“Knight in Armour”); decorated bicycle, “Lizzie. Aldridge. The rain spoilt several of tile decorated bicycles which were of special merit. Mason) desires to sincerely tha.nk the parents and public for the splendid assistance given to the effort. SIDE SCHOOL. CONCERT AMD PRIZE-GIVING. The-annual concert and prizegiving in connection with the sideschool at the Beach took place in the hall on Tuesday evening. Just prior to the concert the rain tum- ' bled down in torrents and during the eonceirt the noise of the rain falling on the iron roof interfered r with some of the items. > Despite the inclement weather, there was a good attendance and those present were well rewarded for the items were without exception full of merit,. and reflected credit upon the two enthusiastic teachers, Misses McMillan and (Fizelle. A special word of praise is also due to Mrs. Bain who officiated as accompanist. There were no delays between the items of a 'well-hal-aneed programme and the children were particularly well-'behaved and everything went off without a , hitch. The choruses were well and heartily sung with special attention to the ennunciation. In the character sketches, parents and teachers must have gone to much trouble in providing fancy costumes. All the items were enthusiastically received. At the conclusion of the con - cert,Mr. P. A. Mason, head teacher; complimented both teachers and scholars oh the excellent entertainment. He made special mention-of the work done during the year by the itwo teachers which had been reflected in the progress made by the pupils. In fact he was so pleased with the work that he had made special mention of it to (the senior inspertor. The standard I class was second to none, in his opinion, in the district. He regretted that the school was to lose the services of Miss Fizelle whose place would be filled next year by Mir. Bastion, now of the Maranui school staff. He thanked! Mrs- Bain and all who had assisted the- teachers in making the concert, such a success-. He concluded by wishing all the compliments of the season. Mir. J. K.
