SECRET CAVES OF THE DEAD.
AfNTIENT MAORI BURIAL PLACE. DESECRATED BY PAKEHAS. Wb&ngarei, Last Night. The discovery that the sceret caves in which the dead of the Parawhau tribe had rested for centuries, had been entered and desecrated, has incensed the chiefs.
One guardian, to whom the location of the eaye was revealed, in accordance with native custom, many years ago, investigated rumours of the lifting of the caves, found the seal broken and skulls lying scattered at the entrance, further investigation to ascertain the extent of the thefts is to be .made.
“How would the pakehas like it if the Maoris stole the skull of a fiend Prime Minister or Governor from its grave and exhibited it as a curio in a drawing room'?” queried a Maori guardian of the ancestral . resting place when speaking to a pi’ess reporter to-day.
