BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening when reports were read and business dealt with as follows: —■_
CORRESPONDENCE From the Commissioner of Transport in regard to a circular sent out in June last asking local bodies to pool their requirements in the matter of traffic signs with a view to having them manufactured in bulk which would prove a saving to all honcerned, stating that the suggestion had not been taken up with any enthusiasm, only eleven per cent, of the local bodies thinking it advisable to obtain their requirements in the manner indicated. The Commissioner urged the Council to adopt the suggestion advanced. —Received.
From same, asking for any suggested amendments to the Motor Vehicles Regulations fonnulated in 3928 and stating that it was proposed to call a small representative conference of local bodies and other interested parties as soon as possible for the purpose of reviewing the regulations. From the Minister of Transport, relative to the (Motor Vehicles Regulations, stating inter alia that it would he very desirable to have a uniform local speed limit throughout the Dominion. —Received. GENERAL. A complaint was received from Mr. G. A. Hobbs, relative to noxious weeds. —The letter was received. The Cle9k submitted estimates in connection with a proposal to extend the water nilaius in Union St. and Norbiton Road, but in view of the excessive cost the Council did not consider the time opportune to take the matter up, it being held over until after pext financial year. The District High School were granted permission to use Easton Paik and baths on December 14th for the purpose of conducting a spoirts meeting for the Thompson Shield.
Mr. Jakobsen was granted permission to cut the grass in Easton Park.
Cr. Cowley drew the Council’s attention to the dangerous state of Purcell Street comer. The road required reforming, tout this was very costly. He thought some warning notice should he erected there. |Gr. Rangiheuea said the corner of Park and Robinson Streets were also very dangerous and should be treated similarly. 'Cr. Barron said if the rule of the light was enforced all corners would be safe as the driver of a car bad only to look to the right. The Clerk said if that rule was carried out and four ears arrived at a corner simultaneously there would be a blockage, as no one would be able to move. The rule of the left would be better. It was decided to write the Manawatu County Council asking if they would allow their engineer to confer with the Council with regard to the Johnston-Purcell Street eor-
Cr. Rangiheuea drew the Council’s attention to the danger constituted by the spread of hemlock in the Borough. This noxious weed, lie said, was now presenting a serious menace. It was spreading all over the borough. X It was decided to call the Noxious Weeds Inspector to the matter.
Cr. Robinson said the wing of the W|hyte 'Street culvert at its junction with Johnston Street required extending about six feet, in order to make it safe. At present it was Very dangctrous. It was decided to request the load foreman to attend to the matter.
Cr. Barron suggested that the grass on the roadside in Park St. should be cut before the summer advanced any further.—-The matter will receive attention. Cr. Robinson asked if the' gas meters were now satisfactory. He suggested that if they were not that an expert should be got to inspect them. .
'The Clerk reported that the meters were now quite all right. WATER AND DRAINAGE REPORT.
The waterworks foreman (Mr. W. Neville) reported ‘that during the month two water meters and four house drains were installed; three -val,ves replaced, noxious weeds cut down, water meters read and general maintenance and ranging woi’k attended to. Pumping Station:— During the month 2,040,000 gallons of watetr was pumped, the'maximum current used being’ 33 amps. During the dry spell in the beginning of the month between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. as much as 25,000 gallons of water was used. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman (Mr. A. O. Huntley) reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged on the following works: * Discharging metal, sand, chips and collix at yard; grading Moutoa and Avenue Roads and Purcell Street; top-dressing footpath Harbour Street and also the road opposite the Town Hail; mixing asphalt in Council yard; preparing footpath in tOmetery and general maintenance work. The work of asphalting the Cemetery footpath is now well in hand but the weather conditions are hindering the completion of the work. The grass in the Ceemtery is'now being cut and asphalt being "mixed for Purcell Street path a£ opportunity offers. . GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. * Mr. C. M’tLean (acting gas manager) reported that the plant at the works was operating satisfactorily. Twf blocked services were attended tenuring the month.
