A passenger who came f!rom Sydney this week was Tommy Crowje, the Australian featherweight champion boxer. He is under engagement to meet Tommy Donovan at New Plymouth. The Trades Exhibition Hall in Manchester, planned by prominent architects and engineers for the “Northern Olympia,” will be the largest of its kind in Great Britain, being nearly twice the size of the main hall at the London Olympia. What is claimed to 'be the longest non-stop railway journey ever made has been accomplished in South America, where a( BeardmpreDiesel electric engine hauled a special train from Buenos Ayres to Cipolletti, a distance of 776 miles, in 20 hours 37 minutes. “A ratepayer got hold of me today,” declared Or. W. J. Humphreys, at the Borough Council meeting in Blenheim, “and said: ‘Why doesn’t the council cut the grass along our streets? It is so long that a woman can’t walk along the path without getting her skirts wet!’ ” “Her skirts wet!” interjected Or. iOarr. “Then, by the Lord Harry, the grass must be very long.” (Laughter). Racing as a means of gaining a livelihood was suggested to the Christchurch Hospital Board by an old lady. Her only trouble Avas that she did not have the necessary capital, and this she asked the Board to supply. Her letter appeared in the report of the benevolent committee as folloAvs:—“I have decided to take up racing. I have a gift and I ought to do very well at It, but there is no money to start Avith. . . . . I am getting too old to woi(k; and racing Avould suit me better. Hoping that the Board Avill be able to help in the matter.”
