TELEGRAPH OPERATORS ON THE MAT.' Auckland, December 5. Conversations on the telephone used by the operating- staff of the Auckland telegraph office during flu- Takapuna Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Monday, have resulted in an interrogation of over 40 'members of the telegraph staff by two inspectors of the Department, who were sununoned from Wellington. The line was tapped by laying a wire under the (arpet, and officers of the Department took a note of all conversations bearing on betting or tips. Those who used the telephone were confronted with notes of these conversations.
In some eases the employees concerned have sought legal advice, It is a ride of the Department that any officer refusing to supply information to a superior may be suspended. Betting conversations on telegraph ’phones by officers on duty are strictly forbidden.
