SANATORIA CONTROL.

* NORTH ISLAND BOARDS (OPPOSE GROUP /CONTROL

A conference of delegates from the Hospital'Boards of the North Island held n;t Palmerston North on Tuesday declined to form a group to take over the 'administration of the Pukeora. and Otaki Sanatoria from the Department, in view of the fact that the institutions were being economically run •already, the conditions of admission were satisfactory, and there was nothing to show that the. boards could run those sanatoria more efficiently. When addressing the large number of delegates present, both the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, and Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, stressed the fact that there was no desire- to force Hospital Boards in one direction or another. Dr. Valintine said that, whatever was decided, there was enough sanatorium accommodation in both islands. There were 50 vacant beds at Puke ora, but if the hospital boards decided to take over Otaki they would probably have to provide 25 more beds.

The Director-General intimated .that the Department would welcome the co-opo/ration of the Boards in an advisory capacity.
