MARTON BOOKMAKERS CONVICTED.

Marton, November 30

.“There has been a good deal of controversy-in Marton lately as to why we afrrest some hookm'akers and let others alone,” remarked Constable H. J. Thompson in the Magistrate’s Court to-day, when Alfred Kaye was charged with using premises in Harris 'Street as a common gaming house. “This is the thirdman we have brought before 'Count in the last month, and I say emphatically we are out to stop the practice.” Kaye pleaded guilty, stating that lie was not a bookmalker by occupation blit just did a. hit of it as a hobby.

Constable Thompson said that when he searched Kaye’s house this morning he found a notebook containing' particulars of bets taken on to-day’s races at Bedding, and also double charts and other betting material. “I will say this for Kaye: lie is a hard-woirking man and only jbets in a small way, but on the. other hand lie has not accepted the warning which the two previous eases provided, and I 'think the fine should be increased.” The Justices of the Peace said, with all due respects to the suggestion of the police, it had been decided to impose a fine of £5, but added: “We would like it to be made known thal the maximum penalty on this charge' is £IOO, or three months, and if we are called upon to deal with similar cases in the future we will seriously consider a penalty of this nature. Marton is a quiet little town, hut hookmaking has cropped up lately and it must stop.” 'The police were to he commended for Clearing up the town and they could depend on the co-operation of the Bench.
