DOUBLE DROWNING FATALITY.

IN WOODVILLE BATHS,

A double drowning fatality occurred in the Woodville Municipal swimming baths last evening, the victims being:— Hubert Noel Dew, single man, aged 21 years, who resided -with his mother in Ross Street, and who was recently appointed caretaker of the baths.

Leslie George Kiwi Goldsack, 16 years, a grocer's assistant, whose parents live in Upper McLean Street.

The pool had only been open for three days and at 6 o’clock last evening, Dew, Goldsack, and the hitter’s 12-year-old brother, Stanley, went together to the baths. They were the only three people there. Leslie Goldsack stripped and went into the water, the others remaining dressed at the shallow end. The swimmer had been in the water only a few minutes when he called out that he was choking and asked for help. Dew at once discarded his coat and dived to his assistance. They got to grips and sank together. Stanley informed a nearby resident, Mr. Jack Horne, of the •occurrence and the latter rushed to the scene, stripped and dived. Very soon, he was able to get hold of Dew and brought him to the surface. Later Goldsack’s body was recovered by Mi‘. R. Peebles. Artificial respiration was carried out for over two hours on both victims but without success.
