THE RECENT RIVERTON FIRE.

MAGISTRATE’S FURTHER REMARKS.

Invercargill, November 27.

The following -statement was made by Mr. W. 11. Woodward, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today. —“It has been brought to my notice that my remarks to one of . the witnesses at the inquest on the victims of the fire at the Carriers’ Arms Hotel, (Riverton, have tended to injure him in his business. My remarks, wliieli were directed to the man himself, have been made widely -known to the public through the Press. Tt is only fair therefore that the public should also know that he is a man past middle age and a .foreigner. Under these circumstances, and seeing that he himself barely escaped with his life from ttlie burning building, his conduct in not exerting himself more to .alarm the other inmates is not so greatly to his discredit as the public might have supposed.”
