The secretary submitted the following financial statement in connection with the anniversary sum-, rner show: — Receipts:—'Entrance fees:, £l2 7/0; 'door takings, £l2 16/9; special and points prize, £9 8/6; subs, to perpetual trophy, £3 5/6; balance of points and specials to collect, £7 6/-; a total of £45 4/3. Expenses: —Judges, £4. 11/-; rent Town Hall and meeting room, £3 19/-; prize money, £25 17/-; judges’ lunches, 12/-; luncheon (visitors), £3; refreshments, 10/-; perpetual trophy, £9 2/6; sundries, 11/-; timber, £1 0/0; printing and advertising, £7 4/0; a total of £56 7/9. Deficit £ll 3/6. The secretary pointed out that there was a lieajvy debit shown in connection with the perpetual trophy. The Chairman expressed surprise at the small amount raised in this connection as lie understood that there would be no difficulty in collecting the cost of the trophy. He did not think the amount should lie debited to the summer show account. It had been agreed that the money should be collected by levy and members should be canvassed for subscriptions. Aliss Speirs thought it w r ould have been advisable to have collected the money before the trophy was purchased. -
The Chairman said that they all agreed to get the trophy andsthe money should have been paid-in irrespective of the choice of the article. It would be a very wise person who could please everyone in thei matter. Air. D. Christie said he did not think a]/ the members had been canvassed yet and when they were he felt sure the amount would he greatly reduced. With regard to the balance-sheet, lie considered it far from satisfactory. A loss of over £lO was shown in connection with the last- show and between £5 and (£6 at the 'Spring show. The Society- had ibeenJ most- unfortunate, due undoubtedly to the unfavourable weather. .Had the weather been more favourable lie considered the entries at the last show would have constituted a record.
Mrs. Aloore said that when the cost of the trophy was deducted a less of £4 onlv was shown.
The Chairman did not agree with Mir. Oiristie’s statement as to the balance-sheet being most unsatisfactory. 'They had certainly been most unfortunate with regard to the weather, but the, door takings bad shown a tremendous increase. Air. Christie: Only a £2 increase.
The secretary howcVelr, produced (lie 'figures for ’last- year’s shows which in comparison with this > ear's showed an. increase. They were as follows: Last, year: Spring show: £lO 0/3; Summer show £9 7/0; a total of £l9 7/9. This year: Spring show £5 10/-; Sumindr Show £l2 16/9, a total of £lB 6/9.
The Chairman expressed surprise that the door takings for the anniversary show were only £l2 16/9 but this was explained by the fact that the Society’s membership had increased to ojver 100 since lastyear and members were admitted free. Judges expenses were also heavier this year besides which a certain amount of expense had to be inicurrod in entertaining the Society’s visitors. The financial statement was adopted after further discussion. Accounts amounting to £56 7/9 were passed for payment. DONATIONS. The following donations were received with thanks: —Air. J. Linklater, £2 2/-, and Mr. G. A. Troup £l. CHILD EXHIBITORS. The chairman mentioned that Air. G» A. Troup had donated the. £1 fotr a class for child flower growers with the recommendation that an exhibition of aquilegia blooms be included in the section. Air.. Walton recommended a special section for this purpose next year and the charge of 3d entry fee. It was suggested that a section be also provided foir vegetables for boys and the chairman offered to donate a prize for this purpose. The matters will be further considered at. the annual meeting. GENERAL. Owing to the departure from Fox'ton of' the President it. Was found necessary to alter the bank authority in regard to the -manipulation of the. Society’s funds and Air. W. Nye was authorised to sign cheques together' wit'll the secretary.
A complaint was received relative to tlie exhibition of certain school work but after the matter was explained by the Chairman members found there was no grounds for complaint and a member of the committee was deputed to explain the matter to the parties concerned.
