SEVENTY-FIVE YEAR OLD LETTER.

FROM DISCOVERER OF NORTHWEST PASSAGE. LATELY FOUND IN NEW ZEALAND. Wellington, Yesterday. Among the New Zealand Government’s despatches there was found some time ago an interesting and valuable historical document written by Admiral McClure on board li.M.'S. Investigation in the Bay of Mercy, in the Polar iSea, on April 10, ,1855. iSo far as is known the lette)r has never been published. Admiral McClure was commander of an expedition sent in the search for Franklin from 1850 to 1855. McClure discovered the North-west passage, but.' had to abandon his ship in the Polar ice in 1802. It is not known how the letter came to New Zealand, nor how it came to (find a place among the official despatches. It is addressed ■to “My Dear John” and was probably a private letter to a son of General John Le Maurier, Governor of Alderney, an old comrade of Admiral McClure’s father and his godfather and guardian. The letter deal with the expedition’s doings and refers the recipient to the Admiralty despatch if he wishes further particulars.
