DEATH OF JACK ABNOTT.
Jack Arnott, one of the most popular and capable track ridefrs, was killed instantly in a crash at the Davis Park Speedway, Brisbane. Arnott was thrown clear of the track, and two other riders managed to avoid him. A third, however, after a frantic effort to stop, crashed into Arnott’s prostrate form. Arnott was a native of New Zealand, where he won numerous championships. He also holds several Australian records. He was 24 years of age.
The late Jack Arnott was one of New Zealand’s most prominent and popular motorcyclists on the grass as well as on the dirt tracks. At Christchurch last year he .won the lightweight championship of New Zealand. Early this year he was an outstanding competitor at meetings at the Kilbirnie Stadium Speedway. His riding was spectacular, and he gave the spectators many a thrill with his frequent crashes in attempts to set up a record. .Finally he succeeded in breaking the records of the Australians, who were there last season, and this success was received with great enthusiasm. An attempt lo beat his ireeord of lmin. 30see. for four laps was made without success on Saturday night. Jack Arnott went to Brisbane some time ago for the opening of the dirt track racing season there. It was in Australia that.he had his first experience of dirt track racing.
In 1026 Arnott was a successful competitor at the Foxton United Sports Association’s annual motor cycle sports meeting. On that occasion he annexed the Herrington Classic event carrying with it the Licensed Victuallers Chip, after a wonderful exhibition of aiding. At the conclusion of the race he was carried from the track shoulder high by his fellow riders.
