Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1929 THE SLOT-METER CASE.
IN dismissing the recent slot-meter ease, Magistrate Stout said the investigations had not gone far enough. The Magistrate further commented adversely upon the delay which followed the audit inspector’s discovery of alleged discrepancies, and made it quite clear .that the audit inspector had no authority for his action in binding the Town Clerk and Mayor to secrecy until some further investigations w are made. The gas manager, should, opinion, have been called in at the time of the audit inspector’s first visit and asked for an explanation, which would have either clarified the matter or would justify the Council —to whom the matter should have been reported —in taking such action as would protect the. ratepayers’ interests. The whole matter will now come officially before the Borough Council twhose investigations and action will he awaited with interest.
