“CLEAN-UP WEEK.”
VOTED OUT BY COUNCIL. The Town Clock (Mr. W. Trueman) submitted an estimate of the cost of a “clean-up week” to last night’s meeting of the Borough (Council in compliance with a request at .the, previous meeting by Cr. D. R. Barron. The estimate showed that the borough could not be cleaned up under £36, hud the Clerk stated that Levin’s figure for this work after being in operation for some years, was £4O.
(. 'Cr.'-Barron i Only one good doe-, tor’s, bill! Cr. Ross said lie did not think the cost prohibitive.
The Mayor, however, considered the town was fairly clean and did not require a. “clean-up week.”
- Cr. Barron admitted the cost was a little more than lie anticipated, bill; said the proposal should be carried out and should be put in operation before the summer property set in. Tlie cost would be insignifeant if it had the effect of preventing an epidemic. The Mayor considered the Council would be creating a precedent by paying for the removal of rubbish. It had a by-law compelling householders to remove rubbish at their own expense and this should be enforced in preferenceto the Council meeting the cost of a “clean-up week.” • ,
ICr. F. Robinson said there were ten old tanks in Coley Street which required removing. A tank would make a load for One cart, and make Ike operation very ; expensive;' He did not think the scheme could he carried out under £IOO. Cr. Barron moved a motion to the effect that the scheme be put in operation, but a seconder was not, forthcoming and the motion lapsed.
