CHAMPIONED BY LEVIN’S MAYOR,

The Mayor of Levin (Mr. C. Blenkhorn) told the Levin Borough Council at its meeting on Monday evening that Hie was a t the meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board that day and that he had seen the new steamer, the Himatangi. He had been surprised to find that she was such a large vessel; ihe understood Hi at she carried a crew of 15. The Himatangi, at the time, had a livestock cargo of 67 head for Lyttelton. His Worship added that he believed the harbour rate would he struck again over the district,next rear, as very extensive repairs would have to he made to the wharf; the stiructure had done duty for a number of years, and an inspection showed that it needed renovations. (Or. Parker: “It brings the costs very close to Wellington and rail.” 'The Mayor went on to state that the port of Foxton was doing quite a big business, and was being patronised by Levin people. Cr." Parker: “Wb are getting prompter shipment.” His Worship. “The vessel is working that river on the glib tides and working it very regularly. The extension of the wharves will mean calling on the contributing bodies to . pay their quoin.” Of. Parker: “What will help us will be the sealing of the road right through, making it bet - ter for the carriers. As the charges for carrying are reduced it will make i! a little belter for ns.” Tlis Worship: “Foxton is doing so well that it hopes to be brought into line with Wanganui and other ports.” Cr. Parker-: “That used to be cheaper for us than Wellington.” His Worship: “I think you will find Foxton serve you (very well.” Cr. Hoe: “Will it hasten the sealing of the road between here and Foxton.” TTis Worship: “I don’t think so.” Cr.. (Roe expressed the opinion that pressure should be brought to bear on the Government to complete the road. —Chronicle.
