NEWS AND NOTES.

Albino, or white, freaks of nature have firom time to time been recorded in Taranaki. Some years ago a white kiwi was captured in the Uruti district. A couple of v ears ago a white blackbird, disported itself in the Fitzroy district. White tuis are occasionally seen, and years ago a specimen was secured' in the Eganont Forest Reserve. An albino skylark was lately seen in the Wareea district. The little bird sang its glorious song while soaring high in the sky. When the sun shone on its white plumage it appeared like a living object of idazzling silyer. Some years ago the Indians resident in the King Country petitioned Parliament foil' permission to burn their dead instead of burying, 1 on the ground that burial was re- . pugnant to the religious beliefs of the Indians. The request was declined. Apparently, however, some regulation has been framed to meet •the wishes of the devout Indians, , for the young boy, Bahvant Singh, who was found shot, was bulrned on a specially constructed pyre at Tatu (Ohura district). The ceremony was carried out by permission of the medical officer of health, and was witnessed by the inspector of health (Mr. S. B.Reed).
