LAND AND INCOME TAX BILL PASSES.
SMALL FARMER USED AS SMOKE SCREEN.

The debate on .the third reading of the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill was continued when the House of Representatives resumed at three o’clock this afternoon. ■ 'Hon. G. '.Forbes, in reply, said the Government’s desire was to make the lot of the working farmer as easy as possible. The Opposition 'had used the small farmers ns a smoke screen for an attack on the Bill in the interests of the large landowner. It was the desire of the Minister of Finance that every precaution should be taken to make provision for any cases of serious hardship tha.t might arise. Money had to be produced tov balance the Budget. On a division being called for, the Bill was read a third time and was then passed by 43 to 24. The Land and Income Tax (annual) Bill was read a second time and .then put through the committee, during which stage a division was taken o.n the clause relating to the. special land tax clause was retained .by 41 to 23 and the Bill was then read a third time and passed. The House rose at 5.55 till 2.30 on Tuesday.
