RAHWAY BRIDGE ABLAZE.

TWO GIRDERS DESTROYED.

TRAFFIC TEMPORARILY HELD UP.

The railway bridge which crosses the Alanawatu River about a mile and a half from Longburn caught alight about 8.20 o’clock last night. It. is surmised that the fire was caused by a. spark from the engine igniting a bird’s nest in (he structure.

The Palmerston Eire Brigade, with a chemical engine and a gang of railway men saved the structure from destruction.

Railway traffic was held up for several hours, and passengers transfedred in ’busses.

Two of the supporting girders were burnt partly through. A repair gang was immediately put- on and it is expected that normal .running of trains will be resumed to-day.
