PALMER'S TON’S EXPECTATION,
The announcement has been made that Palmerston North will shortly attain the status of a. city. The populaion of f lie urban area is ntow 20,800 odd according l to the latest statistics.
There are now six cities in the Dominion: —Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Nelson and Wanganui. The last-named town attained the dignity about lour years ago by passing the 20,000 population mark. (Nelson, which has a population of considerably less than 20,000, was constituted a city by Royal Commission in the early days of the 'settlement, shorty ]\ after the creation of the Anglican Bishopric. Other towns which are approaching a population of 20,000 are Napier and Invercargill.
