SECRET DASH.

NORWAY’S ANTARCTIC BID. There is a possibility that Captain Lutzow Holm, the Norwegian airman, who has recently sailed for Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic,, is engaged in more important work than whaling research. This is suggested by a message received .-by the Capo Times (South Africa) from its Norwegian correspondent, in which the Norwegian expedition is bracketed with Sir Douglas Mawson’s Discovery expedition, and the hint was dropped that the two are, in a measure, competitive. It is reported at Capetown that Captain Holm carries sealed orders, only to be opened at Bouvet Island. Captain ‘Holm will transfer to the Norwe'gia somewhere-in the Antarctic. That vessel has been specially equipped by the Norwegian Government, and is already in Antarctic waters. The Thoroy, on which Captain Holm sailed, besides having a fortnight’s start, is faster than the Discovery. Sir Douglas Mawson declined to discuss the international rivalry when questioned at Durban. The circumstances are very similar to those attending the departure of Captain Scott’s ill-fated expedition in 1910, when Scott was not informed of the expedition of Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian explorer, until the last moment.
