The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1920. LOCAL AND GENERAL

A sharp frost was experience this morning' consequent upon < fall of snow on the ranges las evening.

The poundkeeper reported to last night's meeting' of the Fox toil Borough Council that during the month of August nine head of stock was impounded and driving fees to the amount of 8/- collected.

At last night’s meeting of dho Foxton Borough Council the pound-

keeper reported that owing to the borough horse being lei out of Victoria Park about three limes weekly it had been found necessary to padlock the gate.

Those present at last night’s Borough Council meeting were file Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau) and C'rs. John Ross, D‘. It. Barron, S. E. Cowley, A. R. C'rowe, R. J.

Thompson, F. Robinson, C. Ran R. Rangiheuea. and E. Lueinsky.

Cr. E. Lueinsky made his first appearance at las't night’s Council meeting after his recent serious ill, ncss and was accorded a welcome by his fellow Councillors. Owing to his illness Cr. Lueinsky was prevented from attending Council meetings for some months.

A tribute to -the work of tiro borough waterworks foreman (Mr. W. Neville) was paid by the Mayor at last night’s Borough Council meeting after the reading of the foreman’s report. The Mayor said that. lOouncillors would notice that a great deal of work had been carried out by 'the waterworks foreman during the month buthe wanted to draw their attention to the if act thatyiven when there was not a noticeable amount of work carried out in the borough by this official during the month he was always kept busy and did a great deal of work which was never seen by the casual observer.

We -tender our congratulations to W. Hussey, the local 17-year-old lad, upon his grit, determination and undoubted-physical fitness, in winning-such a gruelling race on Saturday—acknowledged to be the most strenuous road cycling event in the North Island. His victory is all the more meritorious in that lie rode the whole distance unaccompanied. His achievement has put Foxton on the map from a cycling point of view. There is, of course, a price to pay for such sustained physical endurance and we hope that this lad possesses all those organic qualifications which will bring bim future success without impairing his health.

“As far as the Church is concerned we have a solemn responsibility to guard our .methods from any appearance of evil, especially our methods of gaining adherents or raising-funds for the support of the Cluu'ch’s work,” said Archbishop AverilJ at. Auckland in reading his charge to the Diocesan Synod. ‘‘Tfae end does not justify the means, and laxity in this direction on the part of the Church may convey suggestions and sanctions to Hie minds of the young which wijj_ sow the seeds, of deadly harvest in their lives. The duty of the 'Church is to witness to the ideals and standards of Christ and not to make compromises with the world.” ,

Commenting' on the finish of Saturday’s 100 mile road cycle race the Dominion says'“Hussey, fresh as a .daisy, after his strenuous 102 mile race road on to the Basin Reserve at 3.25 p.m. to complete an easy circuit, riding “no hands” in the maijner of CP. and T. message boys ever since there were biboys ever since there lyerc bicycles.”

When interviewed after the race the local champion (W. Hussey) said that be bad found the roads “pretty rotten”'all the way, especially the stretch to Foxton. The southerly was not troublesome -on the first part of the journey, but was stronger after nearing O’taki. He stated that this was only the second occasion: of which he had ridden in * race, the first time being

ir. the recent 55 miles Palmerston North, Foxton,-Shannon road event, when he had several punctures and

• was last man home. His trainer had been Mr. E. Robinson, of Otaki. “The way rubbish bins are used in Now Zealand is a disgrace to the country,” said Dr. Hansen, Principal Trf (be-Christchurch Technical College, when speaking at the conclusion of an address on the menace of the lly pest by the Rev. A. M. Niblock (reports the “Christchurch Times”). “If we were to do elsewhere what we do here we would find ourselves In the Police Court,” he asserted. “We have in this school boys suffering from one or other of the diseases mentioned by Mr. Niblock and attributable to the flies. The time has come, I think, to make the country flyless, and we should all take a hand in it. It is a matter too often left to the women folk in the house, but the men should ircmember that it is their duty to look ' after the grounds on their properties and see that there are no breeding places left.”
