KITE-FLYING NEAR HIGH TENSION WIRES.
WARNING TO CHILDREN
In answer to a question put to him by our representative relative to the safety of kite flying near high tension wires Mr. P. W. Goldsmith, secretary of the Horowhenua 'Power Board, stated that with ■II,OOO volt lines near town there might he considerable damage done in the case of the string attached to the kite fouling a high tension wire if it was wet, when a severe shock would probably be experienced by the holder of the line. Recently, said Mr. Goldsmith, an engineers’ conference debated-* what would happen if -water from a tire hose was played upon a live 11,000 volt line. 'Soane thought that- if the firemen had hold of the brass nozzle the effect would be disastrous, but others contended that the shock would be insignificant. Nobody, however, was anxious to try out the experiment. The same really applied to (kites. No one was anx-ious to try the effect of holding a damp string in .contact with live wires. There was doubtless some risk attached to flying kites under such circumstances and the best for parents to do was to make the children keep well away from electricity lines. In any case kites tangled amongst the, high tension wires were always a nuisance.
