A letter from the Prime Mnister (Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) on the subject of taxation, was submitted to the executive of the Association (Chambers of Commerce at Wellington recently. The report of a special committee, set up by the Wellington Chamber, was also received, recommending that the report of the Taxation Committee of 1924 should again be brought before the Government, and that special emphasis be laid upon the desirability and necessity for the adoption of the committee’s recommendations for 'he 4 (revision of the present basis on" which income and land tax were now levied.
The secretary reported that he liad circularised the principal Chambers of Commerce regarding the proposed increase in primage duty, and in reply seven Chambers expressed themselves as opposed to the increase in the duty and seven Chambers expressed the view that no action should be taken. The majority of the Chambers considered that- reduction in the cost of Government administration should be undertaken.
The action of the secretary was approved, but in view of. the lack of unanimity on the part of Chambers, it was decided that no representations (be made to the Government on the subject. 1
