THE SPRING SHOW.

The evening session of the Foxton Horticultural Society’s spring •>,> show held in the. Town Hall on Thursday was well attended. An added attraction during the evening was an elocutionary competition for children. The section attrac- . ted good entries. My. C. Cronquest of iShannon, was the judge, and .prizes were awarded as follows: ■SINGING. Boys and girls, 16 years and under : Gordon 'Stone (84) 1. RECITATION. BOys and girls,'l6 years and un-. dor: Winifred Harris (87) 1, Gordon Stone .(70) 2. Boys and girls, 12 yeatrs and under: Annie Dorset (85) 1, Wa Thomson (80) 2. x Boys and girls, 8 years and under: ‘ lona Baker (90) 1, Bruce Smith (70) 2. In announcing the result of the elocutionary competition, the judge, (Mr. Cronquest), made a few re-, marks which were intended as a guide and help to competitors in future attempts. In the first place, he said, those taking part should not adopt a fixed stare when delivering their items, hut should address themselves to the audience. In the selection of recitation children confine their choice to subjects of general interest, as if this were not done the audience lost interest, in the theme before its conclusion. Actions also were a necessity adjunct in interpretation, and should be practised by competitors. In (the competition, song, boys and girls under 16, Mr. (Cronquest s said he had no choice but to give the award to Gordon Stone, as he „ was judging this item from the point, of view of music.
