OLD WRECK RECALLED

“Taupo” writes to the Auckland Star: “The death of Captain P. Mclntyre, for many years harbourmaster at Wanganui, recalls the wreck of the steamer Stornibird in 1910 on the South Mole of the Wanganui River. The 'Stormbird, at that time the oldest steamed' in the world, was a regular trader between Wellington and W&nganui, and Captain Mclntyre had been in charge of The vessel before he took up his shore position. Caught in the darkness by a southerly set while clearing the port, the Stormbird crashed through the superstructure of the South Mole and drifted a hundred yards or so before the hull canted and grounded in heavy surf. It was Captain McIntyre who led a small rescue party, They crossed the river by launch, taking rocket gear with them, and then, in the face of a gale, had to literally crawl to the gap in the mole. Several rockets were fired before a line was thrown across the hull of the doomed s teamen', and it was by that means the officers and all but three of the crew were saved. The latter were unable to keep a hold on the waveswept hull, and were washed away.”
