LADY CANDIDATE FOR MUNICIPAL HONOURS.
HUSBAND’S RACE AGAINST TIME. A lady candidate is to contest an extraordinary vacancy on the Greytown Borough Council. The candidate has the whole-hearted support of hejr husband and if the lady possesses the same amount of “go’’ as was demonstrated by her “better half’’ in overcoming difficxdties in a race against time to lodge her nomination with the. returning officer, she wall, if returned, stir up the Council to such activity as will startle the natives. Here is the local paper’s description of the husband’s activities in overcoming obstacles to lodge the nomination:
“At about 11 o’clock it was found that Mrs. Wade had not signed her name to the nomination paper as it appears on the District Electors’ Roll—Watford Wade. The Town Clerk got into touch with Mr. Wade, but his wfie had then left by motor with some friends for Wellington. flVJjr. Wade immediately secured another nomination paper and decided to give chase. He cycled home and jumped into his car, but he had hardly got out of the gate when the machine stopped—the benzine tank was empty. Time was flying and the nomination paper had to be in by 12 o’clock. Filling up the tank Mr. Wade started oft’ in pursuit of the car containing his wife. Luckily he overtook it at ■ Featherston and after brief explanations he set pff back with the signed paper. Mr. Wad.e’s troubles were not all over when he reached Greytown and it was perilously near noon. The paper had to contain the names of two nominators and Mr. Wade again gave chase, secured the signatures and just reached the Council Chambers as the clock struck twelve. “A close sha/ve,” said Mr. Wade, “but I’m glad it’s in as Mrs. Wade would have been terribly disappointed had she missed.”
