MYSTERIOUS GLASS BALLS.
PRESENCE EXPLAINED,
In a letter to the “Wanganui Herald” Mr. S. iChevis of that city gives a vdry feasible explanation as to the presence on beaches in this Dominion on different occasion of mysterious glass balls concerning which paragraphs have appeared in various papers from time to time. He saysj —
“I have read with interest an article in your paper of the 10th August, 1029, re the finding of a glass ball on' a Wanganui beach by Boy 'Scouts. M_ay Ibe permitted to offer a few words which may help to find a solution. 1 am employed by my father in carrying and forwarding agents business in this city, and my work keeps me constantly in touch with cargo being discharged from overseas vessels at Ibis port, and I have from time to time seen large crates of glass balls, a little larger than cricket balls, and of a greenish hue, fastened in a basket or coir or twine, landed on the wharves, consigned to Messlrs Sanford’s Ltd., fish merchants, of Auckland. As recently as last month I saw two of these crates, similarly consigned, landed ex s.s. Rimutaka; so I would suggest that your “find” is probably one of these balls: 'Further, I might say that a glass ball of my description was found on an Auckland beach about a year ago, and excited quite a lot of attention, and I felt surei at the time that it was one of these things that I had seen on the wharf. What the final decision was I have now forgotten, but a number of people wrote to the papers offering various solutions and explanations. I could account for its being found on the West 'Coast because the company mentioned sends its trawlers regularly from here to the. fishing grounds round there. Hoping my explanation will help to solve the mystery and allay any fear.
