HIGHWAYS BOARD FUNDS.
Mr. D. Jones asiked in the House yesterday whether in view of the shoirtage of funds in the Highways Board accounts throwing additional burdens on the ratepayers of Ashburton and other counties, the Government would increase the subsidies to counties in proportion to their loss and thus enable the counties to carry out the roading schemes that had been approved. Hon. :E. A. Ransom replied that he was unable to understand the reference to the shortage of funds in the Highways Board accounts throwing additional burdens on the ratepayers of Ashburton and other countries. (The Highways Board had not yet found it necessary to reduce its rates of subsidy as the result of the present financial position which in all probability would improve in the future.
