Boy scouts in America have received £60,000 under the will of a* man to whom they once showed courtesy.

A little arithmetic with surprising results to the members of the New Plymouth High (School Board was indulged in by Mr. W. H, Moyes, headmaster' of the boys’ school, in a report to the board the ether night. In drawing attention to the necessity for a large lawnmower at the school he pointed out . that to cover the ground at present with the width of the swathe the mower cut the groundsman would .have to walk the almost iuereditable distance of 27 miles. The board did not decline to consider the suggestion fojr more or bigger implements. Interesting light on hotel profits was thrown in the Auckland Supremo Court the othe|r day (says the Herald), during the hearing of a claim for £2OOO over the sale of lease of the, Wynyard Arms Hotel. Evidence was given that it was customary in the trade to estimate the value of a hotel business at a certain percentage on the cost price of tile liquor. The highest percentage of profit was made on draught beei; and the lowest on spirits. The profit pereeutago in the case of the W ynyard Asms was estimated at 75 per cent, to 80 per cent., and an expert witness admitted that in certain hotels it might rise as high as 120 per cent., according to the size of the glass of beer used. The same witness said that if the percentage of profits foil below 66 2-3 per 'cent, a publican would immediately want to know what was wrong. The takings at the Wynyard Anns were stated to be at least £2OO a week, and the value of the empty bottles £5 a week, representing one hundred dozen bottles. ,
