FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s Rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by the President (Mr. J. Iv. IIo|rnblow). Also present were Messrs D. Christie, M. E. Perreau, R. N. Speirs, D. R. Barron, !C. M. Hewett, Geo. Barber, A. Alsop and the secretary (Mr. R. Hoirnblow). An apology for absence was received from Mr. A. E. Scott. WELCOME. The President welcomed back to the Chamber Mi'. A. Alsop, of Manawatu Heads, who had been absent from New Zealand for a considerable time on holiday abroad. He expressed the Chamber’s pleasure at seeing Mr. Alsop hack once more. A welcome was also extended to Mr. Goo. Barber, a new member, of M.arotiri. The President referred to the fact that Mr. Barber was a country (representative on the Chamber but, in years gone by he had taken a particularly active part in local body affairs locally and lie was pleased to see him once again taking an interest in the public life of the town. Years ago Mr. Barber had served the borough well as a Borough Councillor and on the School Committee.
Mr. Alsop returned thanks for his welcome hack to the Chamber and Mr. Barber expressed his pleasure at being connected with the Chamber and regretted) that owing to his long absence from Foxton, he had got, out of touch with local public body affairs. MOTION OF SYMPATHY.
A motion of sympathy was pas sed to Mr. T. McGee, the President referring to the particularly sad double bereavement which bad come upon their member. The motion was passed in silence. CORRESPONDENCE
was read and dealt with __ as follows: —
From the Associated Chambers of Commerce notifying receipt of the Chamber’s remit in reference to affiliation fee. —Received.
From same, enclosing a copy of a circular received from the FederatßTh of Chambers of Commerce of the British Empire relative to the United Kingdom Income Tax.—Received.
Flrom the Foxton Borough Council, notifying the Chamber that the Power Board had been requested to shift the Triangle light as.suggested by the Chamber.—Received. ’ From the Public' Works Department, stating that Mr. Lamason, ■Public Works Inspector, had visited Foxton to inspect the new court; house which was now completed, and that, during his visit he had conferred with the President of the Chamber and the Mayor in reference to the shifting hack of the old picket fence around the new building and the erection in its stead of a small kerb. All parties concerned were agreeable to this, but it was necessary that a confirming letter be forwarded the Public Works Department to this effect. —-The secretary reported that this matter had already been attended to. From the Wellington Automobile Club, in reply to the Chamber’s request for better service in connection with the notification of the state of the Whiirokino road during flood time by means of the road notices provided in Foxton and Levin, stating that the matter was receiving the attention of the Club. —Received.
From the Foxton Harbour Board, notifying that the Board would confer with local body representatives on the question of the preferential (railway tariff at its next meeting to be held in Palmerston North on Monday. The Mayor and Mr. H. E. Garbett were appointed delegates to attend the conference on behalf of the Chamber. From the Publicity Department, enclosing copies of illustrated folder timetable showing the running of the North Island Main Trunk express trains and their connections. —Received.
From . Distributors Limited, Christchurch, in reply to the Chamber’s request for a reduction in freight charges on flour shipped through the port of Foxton, stating that the matter was at present under consideration by the Board and that the difference through Foxton was 10/- pclr ton move, not 15/- as quoted in the Chamber’s letter. — Received.
DANGEROUS IBEND IN UNION STREET.
Mr. Geo. Barber drew the Chamber’s attention to the dangerous ■bend in Union Street towards the eastern end of the road and considered something should be done to improve the road in this location. Manv years ago, when on the Borough Council, he had agitated for and had removed one side of the bill but nothing had been done to the other side. Lupins were also growing on the roadside at this spot' and it was impossible to see any approaching traffic. The Mayor said that the Council had had the matter under consideration and a light had been placed on the bend (to make it safer at night. As the road was a subsidiary highway it was not possible to do anything in the way of improving it at present. THE SANATORIUM ROAD. Mr. Alsop spoke at some length on the beach roads and the need for ■better access to beach sections. A general discussion ensued and Mr. Alsop was advised to place the matter before the Harbouir Board which body had jurisdiction of the beach roads.
SOCIAL EVENING.
At the conclusion of business Mr. Alsop extended an invitation to members of the Chamber to spend a social evening with him at the conclusion of the business of the next monthly meeting. The President, on behalf of the Chamber, accepted Mr. Alsop’s invitation and it was decidod to meet on the last Thursday of next month at 7.30 p.m. and to adjourn the meeting at 8 o’clock. Mr. D. R. Bnirron was deputed to arrange a programme of musical and vocal items.
