Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, AUGUST 27, 1929. HIGHWAYS SUBSIDY.
WHEN the Main Highways Board sanctioned comprehensive schemes for main highways improvements by County Councils there was no indication that the Government would withdraw the £200,000 subsidy. Gangs of men were employed by local bodies and many of the unemployed were thus absorbed and financial arrangements made to carry on. When the Prime Minister announced that the subsidy would be withdrawn it naturally up-, set the calculations of the counties and will cause many of them to modify or delay much of the construction work. To what extent the withdrawal of the subsidy will affect works in this county has yet to be made known, as only portion of the work scheduled has been carried out. The main highway between the borough boundary and So'ronson’s corner lias been formed and in settling down for sealing, and similar work between Sorenson’s corner and Rangiotu is almost completed, while the main highway northwards from Sorenson’s corner to Sanson has not been commenced. To hold up this section of the WellingtonAuckland highway will call forth strenuous opposition as will the delay in the Wliirokino section. It *.s hoped, therefore, that the Manawatu County Council and member for the district will emphatically protest to the Government against any action which will interfere with the completion of this work.
