OIL IN TAUMARUNUI DISTRICT.
HOPEFUL PROSPECTS. Taumarunui, August 19. A resident of Taumarunui, Mjr. E. R. Martin, claims that be has discovered evidences of oil on lands comprising 30,000 acres in the vicinity of Taumarunui Borough. His claim is supported by Dr. Bender, geologist, of Nelson, who reports favourably on Mr. Martin’s discoveries. Last week Dr. Bender gave successful chemical demonstrations of Taumarunui oil-bearing material before the Minister of Mines. As a result of this demonstration an inspector of mines visited Taumarunui at the end of the week and went over the oil-bearing area with Dr. Bender and Mr. Martin, with the object of submitting a report on the alleged discovery to the Department. Springs and oil seepages are plainly evident in parts of the district, and Dr. Bender, who has had much experience on oilfields, is confident that there is payable oil in the district.
